for years i've been told how great and lustrous the indian culture is. and mostly i've been proud to be an indian. but on some days my pride feels a little hollow. Today is one of those days. two incidents in recent days have made me feel ashamed of my home. it hurts even more cause they are both related to AP. i'm talking about the student who was hacked to death by a "spurned lover" and the wife butchered by "pati parmeshwar" for dowry. we can all play naive and dismiss them as isolated incidents of violence by unbalanced individuals.. or we can for once accept the malady in our society. I used the singular form of the word for both these incidents are really effects of the same cause. We DO NOT respect women. if either of these culprits saw the respective woman as a person they would not have commited these atrocities. One killed a bright young student because she didn't reciporcate his "love" and the other harassed and murdered a young woman because her parents weren't quick enough in satisfying his needs. long before commiting these deeds, at some point, both these men reached the conclusion that the woman is something less than human and hence can be toyed with. Afterall what right did that stupid girl have to reject the heartful advances of such a deserving and noble man. How dare she think that she can reject a man like him and live on happily. Also what right did the stupid woman have, to think that the reason for her existence was anything other than being of assistance to her husband. Did she really think she could stop the cash flow and get away with it... how foolish of them both.
These are the thoughts fed into the minds of our young.. how can they ever grow up thinking differently? Grandparents to parents to movies everywhere the kids go they hear how the man is more important than the woman. As long as we preach this principle we will continue to produce more Manohars and Praveen Kumars...
